WHAT IS FIRE?
To appreciate the value of a First Aid Fire Appliance like an extinguisher, you must first understand fire. Fire is a chemical reaction involving rapid oxidation (burning) of a fuel. To initiate and maintain this chemical reaction the following must be present at the same time in order to produce fire.
  • FUEL A combustible substance such as solids, liquids or gas
  • OXYGEN A sufficient amount (over 21%) must be present in the atmosphere surrounding the fuel for the fire to ignite.
  • HEAT The attainment of a certain temperature to the fuel. Once started the heat supply is maintained.
METHOD OF EXTINCTION
Because three ingredients are necessary for fire to occur, it follows logically that if one or more are removed from the equation the fire will be extinguished.
Fire extinguishers put out the fire by taking away one or more of the elements from the fire triangle. REMEMBER keep fuel sources and ignition sources separate at ALL TIMES.
