WHAT
IS FIRE?
|
To
appreciate the value of a First Aid Fire Appliance like an extinguisher,
you must first understand fire. Fire is a chemical reaction involving
rapid oxidation (burning) of a fuel. To initiate and maintain
this chemical reaction the following must be present at the same
time in order to produce fire.
|
| |
|
|
- FUEL
A
combustible substance such as solids, liquids or gas
|
- OXYGEN
A sufficient amount (over 21%) must be present in the atmosphere surrounding
the fuel for the fire to ignite.
|
- HEAT
The
attainment of a certain temperature to the fuel. Once started
the heat supply is maintained.
|
|
METHOD
OF EXTINCTION
|
Because
three ingredients are necessary for fire to occur, it follows
logically that if one or more are removed from the equation the
fire will be extinguished.
|
Fire
extinguishers put out the fire by taking away one or more of the
elements from the fire triangle. REMEMBER
keep fuel sources and ignition sources separate at ALL
TIMES.
